Back when I worked at LinkExchange, a co-worker there ran experiments with ads for his site and found that the best clickthrough came with a black-on-white ad that simply said "CLICK HERE".
But, retention of those visitors was low. Meanwhile, the descriptive "branding" ads with lower clickthrough generated more overall traffic because retention was higher.
